Subaru announced late last week that it would recall 633,842 vehicles, including Forester models made between 2009-2012, Legacy and Outback models made between 2010-2011, and Tribeca models made between 2006-2012. The reason behind the recall is to check a suspected problem within a puddle light fuse that could lead to a fire if it should short circuit.

Of the models recalled, the company believes only 54,000 (less than 10%) are actually equipped with the small accessory lamps which contain the fuse in question. The puddle light is situated within small accessory lamps under the side of the vehicle. The hazard results when moisture containing road salt collecting within the lamp housing, eventually making contact with the circuit board, and potentially causing a fire.

Although there have been about 10 cases of smoke rising from the puddle lamps due to a circuit compromised by moisture, still no fires have been reported. Owners of the models that fall within the applicable model and year ranges with puddle lamps are being advised to contact their dealers. The dealers are installing smaller fuses on the puddle lamps to address the problem.
