If you have been involved in an accident and were injured, it is important that you take the necessary steps to receive compensation and justice for your injuries. One of the first steps that you want to take is to write notification letters to any individuals who may have been involved in the accident. For instance, if you were involved in a car accident, you should have gotten everyone’s name, phone number, license number, and address. If the accident involved you and one other person, you will write a notification letter to the other driver, as well as your insurance company.
What to Include in the Letter
This letter does not need to discuss fault, but instead is meant to simply notify the other parties that you may be pursuing a personal injury claim. In the letter, you will want to go into detail about the accident and that you were injured. Again, this letter is not intended to declare fault or responsibility, or even the extent of your injuries, but just as a notification to make the other parties aware that you intend to file a claim for your injuries.
Even if the other party said that he would contact his insurance companies, it is best to cover yourself and still write notification letters. Below is a list of the important details that you will want to include in your letter:
1. Your name and address –You should include your basic contact information, however you do not need to include your phone number if you do not wish to.
2. Date, time, and location – Be sure to include the date that the accident happened, the approximate time, and the general location. At this point, you do not need to go into great detail about the location of the accident, instead just give the main description of the area; for instance, “at the intersection of Washington and Main.”
3. If you are sending a notification letter to an individual and not directly to an insurance company, request that the recipient of the letter notifies his or her insurance about the accident and to inform you by return letter of that insurance carrier.
4. For the letter that you send to your insurance company, be sure to include the details of the accident, as well as any information you have for the other driver; this includes: name, phone number, address, license number, and insurance information.
Before you send the notification letters, be sure to write the date and time on each. Also, make copies of each letter for your reference. By doing this, you establish the date and time the letters were sent so that when it comes time to file a claim, you can prove that you notified the responsible parties in a timely manner.
